Below is an image George Murray's uniform display at the Frederickburg Battlefield Visitor CenterThe uniform of the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry along with those of many others were modeled both in name and style off those worn by French Algerian soldiers.

A better description of the uniform's origins can be found on the Smithsonian Institute's website:

"The Zouave uniform adopted on both sides by many volunteer units during the first year of the Civil War was based on that of the elite Zouave battalion of the French Army, whose dashing appearance matched its fighting abilities." (civilwar.si.ed)
